The furry fandom is a subculture interested in anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics. The term "furry fandom" is also used to refer to the community of people who gather on the internet and at furry conventions. According to fandom historian Fred Patten , the concept of furry originated at a science fiction convention in , when a character drawing from Steve Gallacci's Albedo Anthropomorphics started a discussion of anthropomorphic characters in science fiction novels. This led to the formation of a discussion group that met at science fiction conventions and comics conventions. The specific term furry fandom was being used in fanzines as early as , and had become the standard name for the genre by the mids, when it was defined as "the organized appreciation and dissemination of art and prose regarding 'Furries', or fictional mammalian anthropomorphic characters". During the s, furry fans began to publish fanzines, developing a diverse social group that eventually began to schedule social gatherings. By , there was sufficient interest to stage the first furry convention. Allegorical novels, including works of both science fiction and fantasy , and cartoons featuring anthropomorphic animals are often cited as the earliest inspiration for the fandom. According to a survey from , most furries believe that visual art, conventions, literature, and online communities are strongly important to the fandom. Fans with craft skills create their own plush toys, sometimes referred to as plushies , and also build elaborate costumes called fursuits , which are worn for fun or to participate in parades, convention masquerades , dances, or fund-raising charity events as entertainers.
The furry community is oftentimes something brought up with a cringe afterward or as a joke, but in reality, the furry community is just like any other community at Iowa State. Some furries wear elaborate costumes or paraphernalia such as animal ears or tails, or represent themselves as anthropomorphic animals in online communities. Also according to furscience. Approximately 84 percent of furries identify as male, 13 percent female, and 2. Approximately one-third identify as exclusively heterosexual and furries are about five times more likely to identify as exclusively homosexual than the general population. Nearly 60 percent of the furry fandom reports part-time or full-time enrollment in post-secondary education. At Iowa State, and in Ames, the furry community is not extremely obvious but has close to 20 members according to Odin Taylor, sophomore in material engineering. Taylor said the community is heavily online, but they do plan get-togethers, and they usually go out as a group on Halloween. Currently, there is no official student organization for the furry community at Iowa State. Anthropomorphic art is any art that centers on adding human features to things often not having them; in the case of the furry community this is often animals.

For people outside of the subculture, the answer has never quite been clear. To a degree, this stereotyping makes sense: these are people who enjoy dressing up in large, overelaborate animal costumes. While not a furry himself, Stewart has made the subculture the focus of his latest photo series. Stewart joined the furries on a group weekend getaway — shooting them as they relaxed, sketched, played cards and listened to music. The photographer also adds that, despite the stereotypes, all the behaviour on the trip remained strictly vanilla. Enjoyed this article? Share this

Since then, she had used Orlando Furry Archives as her primary art upload site. However, in the middle of June , Orlando Furry Archives experienced a fatal server error which essentially wiped out both the main and back up servers. Upon questioning, Harik , the head administrator, said there would be no way to recover the data lost for any of the artists once hosted there. It had a near complete record of her work from to the present. Her drawings are done in traditional media and focus mostly on canines wolves and huskies but also a variety of other species and bodyforms, including taurs , weres , morphic and nonmorphic creatures.
