His soundtrack, due out in album form this Friday, hums with soft electricity, perfectly complementing the journey of the main character, Rue, a teenager caught in limbo between the euphoria of a drug high and the harsh consequences of addiction. I wanted to make sure the music felt like those things. Can you describe the transition from producing into a career as a solo artist? It was like I grew up in a music school. That evolved into them playing my demos and records to record-label executives, and them kind of losing their shit over the music. Sometimes your music can sound better than you look [ laughs ]. They introduced me to Tiny Tempah, who was an up-and-coming urban artist in the U. And that was the moment where the industry turned into … what was it? The Walking Dead. And they were all after me [ laughs ].
I interviewed the singer-songwriter in September about his imminent second album, Take Me To The Truth, which was due later that year. It sounds like it was the age-old problem of the talent wanting one thing while his record label and management wanted another. I wanted to release the record because it was done and they thought I could do a bigger, better record. Our relationship broke down. I think they had difficulty understanding what I was doing and it got really messy. It hurt my confidence, my creative juices.
Timothy Lee McKenzie born 4 January ,    better known by his stage name Labrinth , is a British singer, songwriter, rapper and record producer. After initially pursuing a career in music production, Simon Cowell signed him to his record label Syco Music as a recording artist, after which Labrinth became the first singer who Cowell signed without having competed on a talent show in six years. McKenzie has collaborated with Tinie Tempah on numerous occasions since. Labrinth's first solo single, " Let the Sun Shine " was released in September , reaching number three in the same chart. His debut album Electronic Earth , was released on 31 March , having been preceded by the singles " Earthquake ", featuring Tinie Tempah and " Last Time ", which peaked at number two and number four, respectively. They released their first single, " Genius ", on 3 May , with their second, " Audio ", being released a week later on 10 May Their third single called " Thunderclouds " was released on 8 August Their home was filled with the sound of American gospel music , which their parents loved. His brother, Mac, who is also a music producer, introduced McKenzie at the age of 15 to the art of creating music in his studio.
